GOTS vs OEKO-TEX vs Allergy UK vs Hypoallergenic: What Lingerie Labels Actually Guarantee
Three of these four labels guarantee something you can check. GOTS certifies organic fibre content and the chemistry used to process it. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 tests the finished textile, trims included, for harmful substances. An Allergy UK endorsement means independent laboratory assessment. "Hypoallergenic" has no legal definition and guarantees nothing at all.
That last one surprises people, so it is worth saying plainly: a brand can print "hypoallergenic" on a bra label with no testing, no standard and no consequence. Meanwhile the things most likely to make your skin itch, the dyes, the elastic and the metal in the hooks, are not required to appear on a UK clothing label at all. What does each lingerie label actually guarantee?
Each answers a different question. GOTS asks "what is this fibre and how was it processed?" OEKO-TEX asks "what is left in the finished fabric?" Allergy UK asks "has an independent lab assessed this for allergy sufferers?" And "hypoallergenic" asks nothing, because nobody is checking.

What does GOTS certification guarantee?
GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard, is the strictest of the four on what goes into the fabric. The top "organic" grade needs at least 95% certified organic fibre. Between 70% and 94% a product can only be labelled "made with x% organic materials", so up to 30% may be conventional or synthetic. Below 70%, no GOTS label is allowed at all.
What makes GOTS useful for sensitive skin is that it does not stop at the farm. Every company in the chain, from spinner to dyehouse to maker, has to be certified separately with annual on-site audits, and dyes and processing chemicals must be assessed and approved before anyone is allowed to use them. That is the part that matters if your reaction is to processing residue rather than to cotton itself.
The honest limitation: GOTS is an organic and environmental standard, not an allergy standard. A GOTS-certified fabric can still be made up into a bra with a nickel hook and a rubber elastic, because those are trims rather than the certified textile.
What does OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 test for, and what does it miss?
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 comes at the problem from the opposite end. Rather than tracking how the fabric was made, it tests the finished article against a list of over 1,000 harmful substances, including banned azo colourants, PFAS, cadmium and lead, in line with REACH and the ECHA candidate list. Crucially for lingerie, testing covers every thread, button and accessory, so hooks and elastics are in scope in a way they are not under a fibre-based standard.
There are four product classes. Class I is strictest and applies to babies and small children under three; Class II covers materials with direct skin contact, which is where bras and knickers sit; Class III and IV cover items without skin contact and home textiles. So an OEKO-TEX label on a bra should be Class II, and the class is printed on the certificate, which lasts one year before renewal.
Here is what most shoppers get wrong: STANDARD 100 says nothing about whether a fibre is organic, and a fully synthetic polyester bra can carry it. OEKO-TEX runs a separate ORGANIC COTTON label for that. If a brand says its bras are "OEKO-TEX certified organic cotton", check which certificate it holds.

What does an Allergy UK endorsement mean?
Allergy UK's Seal of Approval has run since 1995 and is the only one of these four built specifically for people with allergies. Products are tested by an independent laboratory, Allergy Research Limited, using protocols based on recognised industry test methods and extended with allergen-specific criteria. The brand does not mark its own homework, and applications take a minimum of twelve weeks.
Worth knowing: the scheme has more than one route. The Seal of Approval is for products independently proven effective at reducing or removing allergens, while the Allergy Friendly Product Award covers products judged unlikely to cause a reaction, which is a different bar. Neither is a legal certification, and neither guarantees that you personally will not react. What it does mean is that somebody independent looked, which puts it well ahead of a word on a swing tag.

Does "hypoallergenic" mean anything on a lingerie label?
No, and the regulators say so themselves. The US Food and Drug Administration puts it bluntly: "There are no Federal standards or definitions that govern the use of the term 'hypoallergenic'", and "the term means whatever a particular company wants it to mean." That is written about cosmetics, where the claim was at least common enough to attract a ruling. For textiles there is not even that.
In the UK, the Textile Products (Labelling and Fibre Composition) Regulations 2012 require a clothing label to state fibre composition and very little else. Nothing about dyes or finishes. Small components such as buttons, buckles and fasteners are excluded from the composition calculation altogether, along with decorative matter of 7% or less. So a bra can be labelled "95% cotton, 5% elastane", be entirely accurate, and tell you nothing about the metal in the hook, the rubber in the band or the dye in the lace.
None of this makes "hypoallergenic" a lie. Plenty of brands using it make genuinely gentle products. It just means the word carries no information, so it cannot be the thing you rely on. Which irritants hide in lingerie that no label has to declare?
Disperse dyes. These are the dye class used on synthetics such as polyester, nylon and acetate, because water-soluble dyes will not fix to those fibres. They sit loosely in the fabric and can rub off onto skin, especially where a garment is tight and warm. DermNet lists them among the main causes of textile contact dermatitis, and Disperse Blue 106 and 124 are established enough as culprits to serve as screening allergens. Practical upshot: dark, saturated synthetics carry the most dye, pale natural fibres the least.
Formaldehyde finishes. Easy-care, non-iron and crease-resistant fabrics get there via formaldehyde-based resins cross-linked into the fibre, a recognised cause of allergic contact dermatitis from textile resins. DermNet advises sensitive skin to avoid anything sold as "non-iron" or "dirt-repellent". None of this appears on the label.
Latex and rubber accelerators. The elastic in a bra band is where this bites. Natural rubber latex is one issue; so are the chemicals used to vulcanise it, the thiurams, carbamates and mercaptobenzothiazole known collectively as rubber accelerators. They are a common trigger where elastic meets skin, which is why the itch so often traces the underband rather than the whole garment.
Nickel. Hooks, eyes, sliders and wire tips. UK and EU chemicals law caps nickel release from articles in prolonged skin contact at 0.5 micrograms per square centimetre per week, but read that carefully: it limits how fast nickel comes out, not whether nickel is there. How is cotton-wrapped elastic made, and why does it matter?
Ordinary stretch fabric uses a bare elastane or rubber filament, or a core-spun yarn where the elastic core is only thinly covered, so some of the stretch fibre ends up at the surface touching you. Covered elastic yarn works differently: the core is wound with a continuous sheath of another fibre, cotton in JulieMay's case, so it is enclosed along its whole length. Single covered yarn has one wrap; double covered adds a second in the opposite direction, which sits more evenly and resists the sheath twisting open under repeated stretch.
The result is a band that stretches and recovers normally, but where the layer against your skin is cotton rather than rubber or elastane. That is why a garment can contain elastic and still suit a latex-sensitive wearer, and why "contains elastane" on a composition label tells you nothing on its own. The question is not whether stretch fibre is present. It is whether it touches you.

Which label should you actually look for?
It depends on what your skin reacts to, and no single label covers everything. If your concern is chemical residue and processing, look for GOTS and check the grade: "organic" means 95% or more, "made with organic materials" can mean as little as 70%. If your concern is the finished article including trims, look for OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 at Class II. If you have a diagnosed contact allergy, an Allergy UK endorsement is the one designed for you, ideally alongside a fibre standard. If all you can see is "hypoallergenic", treat it as decoration.
The more useful habit is to stop reading labels for reassurance and read them for specifics. Ask what touches the skin, what the fastenings are made of, and whether the elastic is exposed. A brand that answers those three in writing is telling you more than any badge.
